How do I reset multi-factor authentication?

Short Answer

Reset multi-factor authentication in Microsoft Entra under Users > All users > Authentication methods. After the reset, the user must register MFA again at the next sign-in.

Requirements

• Access to the Microsoft Entra admin center
• An administrator role that can manage user authentication methods
• A reachable user who can register MFA again immediately afterwards

Steps

1. Open the Microsoft Entra admin center.
2. Go to Users > All users.
3. Select the affected user.
4. Open Authentication methods.
5. Select Require re-register multifactor authentication.
6. At the next sign-in, the user must set up MFA again.

Result

The existing MFA methods are removed or deactivated. At the next sign-in, the user is prompted to register MFA again.
